The Name of the Lord

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10 AV)

How is the name of the LORD a strong tower that provides safety for the righteous man.

It is this way: A name stands for the attributes of a person, the things we think about when that person's name comes to mind. The name itself doesn't mean anything. "Mike" can be a dog, a cat, a device for sending sound to an amplifier, an uncle, a dad, or any number of a great many people as a nick name for Michael. It is the things we attribute to the word that gives it meaning.

The attributes indicate whether or not we are worshipping the living God or some idol in our mind. The true God's attributes are in the Bible and it is there that we learn to know Him.

Now, back to the "strong tower." The Bible says that the LORD is the Living God. He really exists and is the source of all life. People live in Him or they die; it is as simple as that. "In Him we live and move and have our being," is the way Paul put it.

The Lord does not change. This means that we can trust Him and His promises. Because His promises are good, we can safely trust in Him. His power and wisdom are infinite; this means we are secure if we trust Him. He is perfectly wise and knows what we need; He has all power and can do what we need.

There are many other things. But a tower does a person no good if he is not in the tower when danger comes. We enter into the safety of the LORD by trusting in Him, casting our souls upon Him.

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me." Amen and amen.
